Realistic Expectations

When wearing hearing aids:

* Your hearing aids should allow you to listen with less effort.

* It requires time to become accustomed to your hearing aids.

* Your hearing aids WILL NOT restore your hearing capabilities to “normal” or pre-existing hearing levels.

* Not everyone will achieve the same degree of benefit from hearing aids; the ultimate benefit is determined by the nature of the hearing loss.

* Hearing aids DO NOT eliminate background noise.

* In quiet environments, your hearing should improve.

* Your hearing in moderate background noise should improve.

* Your hearing with background noise is NOT going to be as good as your hearing in a quiet environment.

* Soft speech should be audible, average speech should be comfortable and loud speech should be loud, but not uncomfortable.

* You may be aware of soft sounds that were previously not audible. Examples include: footsteps, whispers, crickets, etc.

* Your hearing aids/earmolds should not hurt.

* There should be no feedback when the hearing aids are properly seated in your ears.

* Your voice should be different, but acceptable, to you.
